GST Status Check: ARN, GSTIN, Return & Refund Status Online

GST Status Check

A GST status check can mean four different things, and you can do all of them free on gst.gov.in : (1) Registration (ARN) status — track a new GST application using your ARN or TRN under Services → Registration → Track Application Status (no login needed); (2) GSTIN verification — check if a GST number is active, cancelled, or suspended using Search Taxpayer (no login needed); (3) Return filing status — see whether a business has filed its GST returns (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B); and (4) Refund status — track a refund using its ARN

Most status checks are free and need no login. This helps you track your own application or verify a supplier is genuine before doing business.

Do you want to check a GST status — your registration, a GST number, returns, or a refund? This blog explains every type of GST status check:

What Does “GST Status Check” Mean?

“GST status check” is a broad term, and people search it for different reasons. Before checking, it helps to know which status you actually want:

  1. GST Registration (ARN) Status — “I applied for GST; is it approved yet?”
  2. GSTIN / Taxpayer Status — “Is this GST number valid, active, or cancelled?”
  3. Return Filing Status — “Has this business filed its GST returns?”
  4. Refund Status — “Where is my GST refund?”
  5. Cancellation / Revocation Status — “What happened to my cancellation request?”

Almost all of these can be checked free on gst.gov.in, and most need no login. Let us go through each one step by step.

1. GST Registration (ARN) Status Check

When you apply for GST registration, you get an ARN (Application Reference Number) — a 15-character number to track your application. (Before ARN, in Part A, you get a TRN — Temporary Reference Number.)

How to check GST registration status by ARN:

  1. Go to gst.gov.in.
  2. Click Services → Registration → Track Application Status.
  3. Select “Registration” in the module.
  4. Choose to search by ARN, SRN, or submission date.
  5. Enter your ARN and the captcha.
  6. Click Search — your application status appears.

No login is needed for this ARN tracking.

What the registration status words mean:

  • Pending for Processing: Your application is submitted and with the officer.
  • Pending for Clarification: The officer has asked for more details — you must reply (via “Application for Filing Clarifications”).
  • Clarification Filed – Pending for Order: You replied, and it is under review.
  • Approved: Your registration is granted — your GSTIN and certificate are issued.
  • Rejected: The application was not approved, check the reason and re-apply.

How to Check GST Status by TRN (Before ARN)

If you have only completed Part A of registration, you have a TRN (Temporary Reference Number), not yet an ARN. To continue and check:

  1. Go to gst.gov.in  → Services → Registration → New Registration.
  2. Select “Temporary Reference Number (TRN)”.
  3. Enter your TRN and the captcha, then verify with OTP.
  4. You can see your saved application (draft) and its stage, and continue filling Part B.

A TRN is valid for a limited time, complete Part B before it expires, or you must start again.

2. GSTIN / Taxpayer Status Check (Verify a GST Number)

Verifying whether a GST number (GSTIN) is genuine and active. You should do this before dealing with any new supplier, so you can safely claim Input Tax Credit (ITC).

How to verify a GSTIN (no login needed):

  1. Go to gst.gov.in .
  2. Click Search Taxpayer → Search by GSTIN/UIN.
  3. Enter the 15-digit GSTIN and the captcha.
  4. Click Search.
  5. The taxpayer details appear — legal name, trade name, state, registration date, taxpayer type, and GSTIN status.

What the GSTIN status means:

  • Active: The GSTIN is valid and working — safe to deal with.
  • Cancelled: The registration is cancelled — do not claim ITC on their invoices.
  • Suspended: The GSTIN is temporarily suspended — be cautious.
  • Inactive / Provisional: Not fully active — verify further.

Always verify a new supplier’s GSTIN before doing business. An invoice from a cancelled or fake GSTIN means you lose the ITC and may face problems.

How to Search GST Number by PAN

You can also find all GST registrations linked to a PAN useful to check if someone has GST, or find their GSTIN:

  1. Go to gst.gov.in  → Search Taxpayer → Search by PAN.
  2. Enter the PAN and the captcha.
  3. Click Search.
  4. It shows all GSTINs registered under that PAN, across states, with their status.

3. GST Return Filing Status Check

You can check whether a business has filed its GST returns — useful to confirm a supplier is compliant so your ITC is safe..

How to check return filing status:

  1. Go to gst.gov.in → Search Taxpayer → Search by GSTIN/UIN.
  2. Enter the GSTIN and captcha, and search.
  3. On the result page, click “Show Filing Table”.
  4. You can see the returns filed (like GSTR-1, GSTR-3B), the period, and the filing date.

If a supplier has not filed their returns, their invoices may not appear in your GSTR-2B, and you cannot claim ITC on them.

For your own returns: After logging in, go to Services → Returns → Track Return Status to see the status of your own filed returns (Filed, Submitted, Not Filed).

4. GST Refund Status Check

If you applied for a GST refund (for exports, excess payment, inverted duty, etc.), you can track it using its ARN.

How to check refund status:

Option 1 — Without login (basic tracking):

  1. Go to gst.gov.in → Services → Refunds → Track Application Status.
  2. Enter your refund ARN.
  3. View the current stage of your refund.

Option 2 — After login (detailed):

  1. Log in to gst.gov.in .
  2. Go to Services → Refunds → Track Application Status.
  3. Select the financial year or enter the ARN.
  4. See the detailed refund stages — from filing to processing to payment.

application filed → assigned to officer → processing → sanctioned/rejected → refund credited to bank.

Refunds are paid to your validated bank account to make sure your bank details are correct on the portal to avoid delays.

5. GST Cancellation / Revocation Status Check

If you applied to cancel your GST registration, or to revoke (undo) a cancellation, you can track that too:

  • After login, go to Services → Registration → Track Application Status, choose the right module, and enter the ARN.
  • You can see whether your GST cancellation or revocation request is pending, approved, or rejected.

Note: If your GSTIN was cancelled by the department (for example, for non-filing), you may apply for revocation within the allowed time and track that status here.

If your registration was cancelled for non-filing, first file the pending returns, then apply for revocation.

Why GST Status Checks Are Important

Doing these checks regularly protects you and your business:

  • Track your own application — know exactly when your GST is approved.
  • Verify suppliers — avoid fake or cancelled GSTINs and protect your ITC.
  • Confirm compliance — check if a supplier files returns before trusting big invoices.
  • Track your refund — know where your money is.
  • Catch problems early — spot a suspended GSTIN or a pending clarification before it becomes a big issue.

GST Status Checks You Can Do WITHOUT Login

Many people do not know that most GST status checks are open to the public — no login required:

  • Track registration (ARN) status
  • Verify a GSTIN (Search Taxpayer)
  • Search by PAN
  • Basic return filing status (Show Filing Table)
  • Basic refund tracking by ARN

Only these usually need login: your own detailed return status, detailed refund tracking, and cancellation/revocation requests.

Common Problems and Solutions

  • ARN not found: Check you typed the correct ARN; wait a little if the application is very new.
  • Status stuck at “Pending for Processing”: It is with the officer — wait for the timeline, or it may get deemed approved.
  • “Pending for Clarification”: Reply quickly with the asked details, or it will be rejected.
  • GSTIN shows cancelled: Do not claim ITC on that supplier — ask them to clarify.
  • Return filing table empty: The taxpayer may not have filed — a compliance risk.
  • Refund delayed: Check your bank account is validated on the portal.
  • Someone asking for money to “check status”: All these checks are free  do not pay.

Beware of Fake GST Status Websites and Scams

Because people search for GST status, scammers create fake sites and messages. Stay safe:

  • Only use gst.gov.in  — type it yourself; do not click links in SMS/WhatsApp/email.
  • Never share your login password or OTP with anyone.
  • Beware of fake “GST status” apps or sites that ask for your bank details or a fee.
  • Official status checks are free — anyone charging a “government fee” is a fraud.

If cheated: report to 1930 / cybercrime.gov.in.

Conclusion

A GST status check covers several things, and you can do almost all of them free on gst.gov.in — most without even logging in. To track a new registration, use your ARN under Track Application Status. To verify a GST number (active, cancelled, or suspended), use Search Taxpayer — and always do this before dealing with a new supplier to protect your ITC. To check return filing, use the Show Filing Table, and to track a refund, use its ARN.

Most checks are free and need no login, the GSTIN status tells you if a supplier is safe to deal with, and a pending clarification on your registration must be answered quickly. Use only the official portal gst.gov.in , never pay a “fee” to check status, and never share your password or OTP.

3. What is an ARN in GST?

ARN (Application Reference Number) is a 15-character number you get after submitting a GST application (registration, refund, amendment, etc.). You use it to track the status of that application on the portal. Before ARN, in Part A of registration, you get a TRN.

5. How do I check my GST refund status?

Go to Services → Refunds → Track Application Status and enter your refund ARN (basic tracking needs no login). After logging in, you can see detailed refund stages, from filing and processing to the refund being credited to your bank account.

6. Do I need to log in to check GST status?

You can use many GST services without logging in. You can track an application by ARN, verify a GSTIN, search by PAN, check basic return status, and track basic refund status. Login is needed for detailed return or refund information and for cancellation or revocation requests.

It means the officer has asked for more details or documents. You must reply through “Application for Filing Clarifications” within the given time. If you do not respond, your application is likely to be rejected.

8. What should I do if a GSTIN show is cancelled?

Do not claim ITC if the supplier’s GSTIN is cancelled. Check their GST status before buying from them.

Yes. Go to Search Taxpayer → Search by PAN, enter the PAN and captcha, and search. It shows all GSTINs registered under that PAN across different states, along with their status — useful when a business operates in multiple states.
