Process For Foreign Manufacturers

Foreign manufacturers' process is a defined process where the appointment of an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) is obligatory. The AIR is the essential interface between the foreign manufacturer and BIS. On nomination of an AIR, the process includes:

• Online filing of the application.
• Sending the product samples to a BIS-approved laboratory for inspection.
• Filing of the test report along with the application.
• Verification and inspection of all documents by BIS officers.
• Issuance of the license upon successful verification.

Instructions for Nomination of an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR)

For foreign producers, a first step, which is compulsory, is the appointment of an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR). The provisions regarding the appointment are clear as crystal:

• Clause 1: In the event of having a liaison or branch office of the foreign producer in India, then the latter shall be the AIR.
• Clause 2: Where there is no such office but there is the proprietor or the registered user of the product brand/trademark in India, then the latter shall be the AIR.
• Clause 3: Where the above two are not possible, then any other Indian organization can be appointed as the AIR, subject to the condition that it should be an Indian company registered in India.

Process For Indian Manufacturers

The process is easier for Indian (domestic) manufacturers as they don't need to appoint an Authorized Indian Representative. The process is the following:

• Initiate online filing of the application.
• Submit product samples tested at a BIS-approved laboratory for conformity to IS 13252 (Part 1): 2010.
• Submit online/offline the test report and application.
• The application and supporting documents are inspected and verified by BIS officers.
• The licence is issued after verifying that the application has been filed properly.

Documents Required for BIS Registration for Keyboard

• Photo ID & Address Proof of Authorized Signatory – Aadhaar/Passport/Driving License.
• For Foreign Manufacturers: Copy of Company Registration of Authorized Indian Representative (AIR).
• Agreement/Authorization Letter appointing AIR – confirming appointment of the AIR for BIS dealings.
