The Ordinary Design Application is the standard design registration in India as this safeguards any original or new design when applied to any article. Initially, the duration of protection is ten years from the date of registration which can be extended up to five years which is subject to renewal fees.

This type of application is useful in convention countries when a registered file is based on a previously filed application. For example, if an applicant has filed an application in the Paris Convention for design registration to which India is a party, then the applicant can claim its priority within a period of six months in India from the date when the application was first filed.
