Aadhaar card

To download your Aadhaar card in Tamil Nadu, go to the official UIDAI Aadhaar portal (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in ), click “Download Aadhaar”, enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number (or EID/VID) and captcha, Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number. , and download the e-Aadhaar PDF — it is free. Open the PDF with the password = first 4 letters of your name in CAPITALS + your birth year (YYYY), for example RAJE1985.

Aadhaar is a national document from UIDAI, so the process is the same all over India, including Tamil Nadu. You can also download it from the mAadhaar app or DigiLocker, order a PVC card (about ₹50), or get help at a Tamil Nadu Aadhaar Seva Kendra or e-Sevai/CSC centre.

Is There a Special “Tamil Nadu Aadhaar card”?

There is no separate “Tamil Nadu Aadhaar card.” Aadhaar is a national document issued by the UIDAI, the Central Government body. So the download process is exactly the same in Tamil Nadu as in every other state.

In Tamil Nadu, you can get local help through these services:

  • Aadhaar Seva Kendras (ASKs) and enrolment centres across Tamil Nadu, for updates and biometric work.
  • e-Sevai and CSC centres (over 10,000 in TN) that can help you download or print your Aadhaar.
  • Tamil language support on the UIDAI portal and the mAadhaar app.

So if you live in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, Salem, or any part of Tamil Nadu, you use the same UIDAI portal.

What is e-Aadhaar and is it Valid?

The e-Aadhaar is the digital (PDF) version of your Aadhaar card, digitally signed by UIDAI. It has all the same details as your printed card — your 12-digit Aadhaar number, name, address, date of birth, gender, photo, and QR code.

The e-Aadhaar is as valid as the physical Aadhaar card. You can use it for banks, SIM cards, KYC, admissions, and government services.

So you do not need to wait for a physical card by post — a downloaded e-Aadhaar works everywhere.

What You Need Before You Download Your Aadhaar card

Before you start, keep these ready:

  • Your 12-digit Aadhaar Number, or your 28-digit Enrolment ID (EID), or your 16-digit Virtual ID (VID).
  • Your mobile number registered with Aadhaar (an OTP will be sent to it).
  • Your name and birth year (for the PDF password).

Online download works only if your mobile number is registered with Aadhaar. If your number is not linked, see the special section below.

Method 1: Download Aadhaar card from the UIDAI myAadhaar Portal (Step-by-Step)

This is the main and most common method. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Go to the official portal myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in .

Step 2: Click on “Download Aadhaar” under the My Aadhaar section.

Step 3: Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar Number and the captcha code.

Step 4: If you want privacy, tick “Do you want a Masked Aadhaar?” (this hides the first 8 digits).

Step 5: Click “Send OTP”. You will get an OTP on your registered mobile number

Step 6: Enter the OTP and click “Verify & Download”.

Step 7: Your e-Aadhaar PDF downloads to your device.

The download is free, and you can do it any number of times.

Method 2: Download Aadhaar card Using the mAadhaar App

The mAadhaar app (by UIDAI) lets you download and carry your Aadhaar on your phone:

  1. Install the mAadhaar app from the App Store or Google Play Store.
  2. Open it, select your language, and log in with your registered mobile number and OTP.
  3. Set a 4-digit app PIN (this is for app security, not the PDF password).
  4. On the dashboard, tap “Download Aadhaar” under Get Aadhaar.
  5. Enter your Aadhaar Number / EID / VID and the captcha, then verify with OTP.
  6. Your e-Aadhaar is saved in the app.

The app also lets you lock/unlock biometrics, order a PVC card, and update your address. You can store the Aadhaar of up to 3–5 family members in one app.

Note: UIDAI announced in 2026 a New Aadhaar App with Face Authentication. The download tile may move, but the function stays the same.

Method 3: Download Aadhaar card from DigiLocker

DigiLocker is a government app that stores your official documents. It is linked with UIDAI:

  1. Install DigiLocker (or go to digilocker.gov.in ) and sign in with your mobile number and OTP.
  2. In “Search Documents”, type UIDAI and select Aadhaar.
  3. Enter your Aadhaar number and verify with OTP.
  4. Your Aadhaar appears under “Issued Documents” — tap the three-dot icon → Download.

The Aadhaar from DigiLocker carries the same UIDAI signature and is fully valid. You can also use the UMANG app in the same way.

The e-Aadhaar PDF Password

The downloaded PDF is password-protected. The password is simple.

The password is 8 characters:

  • Write the first four letters of your name in CAPITAL letters. , plus
  • Your birth year in YYYY format.

Examples:

  • Name RAJESH, born 1985 → password RAJE1985
  • Name PRIYA, born 1998 → password PRIY1998
  • Name S. KUMAR, born 1990 → password S.KU1990

The password never changes and cannot be reset. Just type it in capital letters to open your e-Aadhaar.

You can retrieve it first:

  1. Go to the myAadhaar portal and click “Retrieve EID/Aadhaar Number”.
  2. Enter your full name, registered mobile number or email, and captcha.
  3. Click “Send OTP” and verify.
  4. Your Aadhaar Number or Enrolment ID will be sent to your email or registered mobile

So even if you lost your Aadhaar card and number, you can get it back easily as long as your mobile is registered.

How to Download Aadhaar card Without a Registered Mobile Number

If your registered mobile number is not linked to Aadhaar or has changed, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre in Tamil Nadu.
  2. Have a valid ID, like your PAN card, Voter ID, or driving licence.
  3. Complete biometric like fingerprint/iris verification.
  4. Update your mobile number, or request a printout / PVC card there.
  5. After the mobile is linked, online download works.

What is Masked Aadhaar and When to Use It?

Masked Aadhaar is a special version that hides the first 8 digits of your Aadhaar number (it shows only the last 4 digits, like XXXX XXXX 1234).

  • It protects your privacy when you share Aadhaar for KYC, rentals, or job applications.
  • It still has your name, photo, address, and QR code, and is fully valid.
  • To get it, tick “Do you want a Masked Aadhaar?” while downloading on the portal.

Use masked Aadhaar whenever you must share a copy but do not want your full number visible.

How to Order an Aadhaar PVC Card (Durable Plastic Card)

If you want a strong, wallet-sized plastic Aadhaar card, order a PVC card:

  1. Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in  or the mAadhaar app and click “Order Aadhaar PVC Card”.
  2. Enter your Aadhaar Number / VID / EID.
  3. Verify with OTP (you can even use an alternate mobile if your number is not registered).
  4. Pay the fee — about ₹50 (some sources note ₹75 including GST and Speed Post).
  5. You get an SRN number to track it.
  6. UIDAI prints it and delivers it by India Post Speed Post to your registered address, usually within a few days.

The PVC card has security features and a QR code, and it is more durable than a paper printout.

How to Download Aadhaar card for a Child in Tamil Nadu

For a child’s Aadhaar (sometimes called Baal Aadhaar):

  • If the child’s Aadhaar is linked to a parent’s or guardian’s registered mobile number, you can download it online using OTP on that mobile, the same way as an adult.
  • Use the child’s Aadhaar number and follow Method 1 or the mAadhaar app.

So a parent can easily download and keep the child’s e-Aadhaar on their phone.

Download Aadhaar card After an Address or Detail Update

  • An update usually takes some time to process (often up to 30 days, sometimes more).
  • Once UIDAI approves the update, download the fresh e-Aadhaar — it will show the new details.
  • Check your update status on the myAadhaar portal before downloading.

So always download again after an update to get the latest copy.

Common Aadhaar card Download Problems and Solutions (Tamil Nadu)

Here are the common problems and solution:

  • OTP not received: Your mobile must be linked to Aadhaar. If not, visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra to update it.
  • Wrong PDF password: Use the first 4 letters of your name in CAPS + birth year (e.g. RAJE1985). Check the spelling as per Aadhaar.
  • PDF not opening: Use Adobe Acrobat Reader and the correct password; try a desktop if mobile fails.
  • Aadhaar number forgotten: Use “Retrieve EID/Aadhaar Number” on the portal.
  • Fake websites: Use only myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. Many other “Aadhaar download” sites are not official — never pay them or share your OTP.
  • No smartphone/internet: Visit a Tamil Nadu e-Sevai / CSC centre, which can download and print your Aadhaar for a small charge.
