Smart Ration Card eKYC: How to Complete Aadhaar e-KYC (TNPDS Tamil Nadu)

Smart Ration Card eKYC

Smart ration card eKYC is the mandatory Aadhaar verification of every member on your ration card. The easiest way is offline: visit your Fair Price Shop (ration shop) with your Aadhaar, and each family member places their finger on the ePoS biometric machine,  a green tick means that member’s eKYC is done. It is completely free.

You can also try the Mera Ration app (Aadhaar seeding with OTP or face authentication) Make sure your Aadhaar is linked to your mobile number. eKYC removes duplicate names and lets you use ONORC. Ask your ration shop for the latest deadline. For help, call 1967.

What is a Smart Ration Card eKYC?

eKYC means electronic Know Your Customer. For a ration card, it simply means proving that each person on the card is real, alive, and still eligible using Aadhaar.

The verification happens through biometric authentication, your fingerprint or iris scan which is checked directly against the Aadhaar database. If it matches, that member’s eKYC is complete.

In Tamil Nadu, the Smart Ration Card is already fully digital and Aadhaar-linked, and you collect ration using biometric authentication at the Fair Price Shop. Every person listed on the ration card must be verified through eKYC. The head of the family alone is not enough.

Why is Ration Card eKYC Mandatory?

The government made eKYC compulsory for reasons:

  • To remove “ghost” names: Many cards still list people who have died, moved abroad, or migrated to other states years ago. These names affect the system.
  • To stop duplicate cards: A person cannot be on two ration cards  eKYC catches this.
  • To stop diversion: It ensures the rice, sugar, and other items meant for your family are not taken by someone else using an inactive card.
  • To unlock ONORC portability: Completing eKYC is what allows you to collect ration from any ration shop in India under One Nation One Ration Card.

Who Needs to Complete the Smart Ration Card eKYC?

All members on the ration card must complete their own eKYC. Not only the head of the family.

That includes:

  • The head of the family
  • Spouse and children (children too, as per the rules in force)
  • Elderly parents and other dependants
  • Members working in another city or state (they can do it at any ration shop where they are)

If even one member does not complete eKYC, that member’s name can be removed from the card, and the family’s entitlement may be reduced.

How to Complete Smart Ration Card eKYC at the Fair Price Shop

Follow these steps:

Step 1: Pick a time when all family members on the card are available.

Step 2: Go to your Fair Price Shop (ration shop) with your Aadhaar cards and your ration card number.

Step 3: The shop staff enter your card details into the ePoS (Point of Sale) machine.

Step 4: One by one, each family member places their finger on the biometric scanner (or does an iris scan).

Step 5: If the fingerprint matches the Aadhaar database, a green tick appears next to that member’s name.

Step 6: Repeat until every member on the list is verified.

You can complete eKYC at any ration shop in Tamil Nadu. You do not have to visit your own ration shop. It is free of cost.

How to Do Smart Ration Card eKYC Online (Mera Ration App)

If you cannot reach the shop easily, you can try the online:

  1. Download the Mera Ration app (Android or iOS), the official national PDS app.
  2. Open the “Aadhaar Seeding” option.
  3. Enter your ration card number and Aadhaar details.
  4. Verify using the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile some versions also support face authentication.
  5. Submit and check the confirmation.

Your Aadhaar must be linked to an active mobile number, or the OTP will not come.

You can use the app for Aadhaar seeding and checking your details. But to complete eKYC, you usually need a biometric scan at a Fair Price Shop.

What Documents Do You Need for a Smart Ration Card eKYC?

Keep these ready:

Your name on the ration card should match your Aadhaar. If there is a spelling mistake, get the name corrected first on tnpds.gov.in  , otherwise the eKYC may fail.

How to Check Your Smart Ration Card eKYC Status

After completing eKYC, you can confirm it:

  • At the ration shop: Ask the dealer to check your card on the ePoS machine — verified members show a green tick.
  • On the Mera Ration app: Check your Aadhaar linking / eKYC status for each member.
  • On the state PDS portal (tnpds.gov.in ): Log in as Beneficiary with your registered mobile number and OTP to view your card and member details.

If a member still shows as not verified, take them to the shop again for the biometric scan

What is the Smart Ration Card eKYC Deadline?

  • The government sets deadlines for completing ration card eKYC, and these deadlines have been extended several times, both nationally and in Tamil Nadu.
  • Different states have different dates, and dates are often pushed forward when many people are still pending.

Note: Always check the official deadline. Visit your ration shop or the TNPDS website for the latest update.

What Happens if You Do Not Complete a Smart Ration Card eKYC?

Skipping eKYC has real consequences:

  • Your ration supply can be stopped for the unverified member.
  • The member’s name can be removed from the card as a “ghost” entry.
  • Your family’s monthly entitlement can be reduced.
  • You cannot use ONORC portability to draw ration in another state.
  • Restoring a removed name takes extra time and paperwork.

Common Smart Ration Card eKYC Problems and Solutions

  • Fingerprint not matching: Older people and manual workers may have fingerprint problems. Ask for an iris scan or try again another day. The ration shop can also refer your case to the Taluk Supply Office.
  • Name mismatch with Aadhaar: Update your name on the TNPDS website first. After that, do your eKYC again.
  • No OTP on the app: Your Aadhaar is not linked to an active mobile update at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
  • Members living in another state: They can complete eKYC at a ration shop where they are, under portability.
  • Member died or moved permanently: Use the Remove Member service on the TNPDS portal instead of eKYC.
  • Machine or server down: Busy days can cause this problem. Try visiting early in the morning or on a less crowded day.

Is Smart Ration Card eKYC the Same as Scheme eKYC?

  • Ration card eKYC is real and mandatory — a biometric Aadhaar verification of every member, done at the Fair Price Shop.
  • Welfare scheme “eKYC” (for example, for the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai ₹1,000 scheme) is not a separate button or process. There, what actually matters is your Aadhaar–bank NPCI seeding, which decides whether your money is credited.

There are two different updates. eKYC is completed at the ration shop, while bank seeding is done at your bank. Completing one does not complete the other. These are separate processes.
