AP Women Self Help Group Loan Scheme: SHG Bank Loan, SthreeNidhi & How to Apply

SHG

In Andhra Pradesh, women get loans through Self Help Groups (SHGs), not as single persons. First join or form an SHG (10–20 women) in your village or ward. After the group saves regularly for a few months, it gets a bank loan under the SHG–Bank Linkage Programme, based on its Micro Credit Plan (MCP).

For quick money, the group can also borrow from SthreeNidhi, which sends credit to the SHG’s bank account within 48 hours using a simple mobile request. The programme is run by SERP (Velugu) in rural areas and MEPMA in towns. Andhra Pradesh leads India with about 35% of all SHG bank loans and a 99% repayment rate.

What is the AP Women Self Help Group (SHG) Loan Scheme?

A Self Help Group (SHG) is a small group of 10 to 20 poor women from the same village or ward. They meet every week, save a small amount (thrift), and lend that money to each other. This is called internal lending.

The SHG movement started in Andhra Pradesh in 1998. It is based on three simple ideas: saving, self-help, and lending money within the group.

SHG women usually have no land, no property, and no collateral to give to a bank. So banks did not lend to them before. But SHGs built trust through their group discipline, regular saving, and good repayment. Because of this trust, banks now give them loans — this is the SHG–Bank Linkage Programme.

In AP, a woman does not get this loan alone. Her group gets the loan, and the group gives it to its members.

How the SHG Structure Works (SHG → VO → Mandal Samakhya)

Before applying for an SHG loan, it is helpful to understand the three levels of the SHG system.

  1. SHG (Self Help Group): An SHG has 10 to 20 women from a village or ward. Members save money and lend money to each other.
  2. Village Organisation (VO): All the SHGs in one village join to form a VO. The VO helps the groups and passes on loans.
  3. Mandal Mahila Samakhya (MMS): All VOs of a mandal join to form the Mandal federation. Above this is the Zilla (district) Samakhya.

Who Can Join an SHG and Get a Loan?

You can join if:

  • You are a woman and a resident of the village or ward.
  • You belong to a poor / BPL family (a white ration card is usually the base).
  • You are ready to save a small amount every week and attend the meetings.
  • You will repay your loan on time.
  • You are not a defaulter in another group.

Note: Usually only one woman from a family joins an SHG. And you get a loan only after your group has saved regularly for a few months and shown good discipline.

How to Join or Form a Self Help Group in AP

If there is no SHG near you, you can start one. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Talk to 10–20 poor women in your village or ward who are willing to save together.
  2. Contact your Village/Ward Sachivalayam, the DRDA-Velugu (SERP) staff, or the MEPMA office in towns.
  3. The staff or a Community Resource Person (CRP) will help you form the group.
  4. Fix your weekly meeting day, saving amount, and group rules.
  5. Open a joint bank account in the group’s name.
  6. Start saving weekly and doing internal lending among members.
  7. Keep your books, minutes, and records clean and updated.

SHG–Bank Linkage Loan: How a Group Gets a Bank Loan

Here is how it works:

  1. Your SHG saves regularly and builds a corpus fund (group savings).
  2. The bank grades your group on its discipline, savings, records, and repayment.
  3. Your group prepares a Micro Credit Plan (MCP) — a simple plan showing which member needs how much money, for what purpose.
  4. The VO recommends the plan, and the bank sanctions the loan to the SHG.
  5. The loan comes to the group’s bank account, and the group lends it to its members as per the MCP.
  6. Members repay to the group, and the group repays the bank.

Your group discipline is your security. Loan size grows with each cycle — a well-run group gets bigger repeat loans.

What Can SHG Loans Be Used For?

SHG loans can be used for many real needs:

  • Income generation: small business, shop, tailoring, dairy, animal husbandry, agriculture.
  • Consumption smoothening: urgent family needs.
  • Health and education expenses.
  • Repaying old, high-interest debts taken from moneylenders.
  • Buying tools, equipment, or stock for a business.

SthreeNidhi: Get SHG Credit Within 48 Hours

SthreeNidhi is a loan programme of the Andhra Pradesh Government and Mandal Samakhyas. It gives loans to SHG women.

It was started because bank loans can be delayed or too small. SthreeNidhi helps women avoid borrowing from private moneylenders with high interest.

How SthreeNidhi works:

  1. The SHG uses a mobile phone to send the loan request. The SHG codes are already available in the system.
  2. If the Village Organisation has funds, the group gets the money immediately.
  3. The VO then sends the details to SthreeNidhi through IVRS and gets reimbursed.
  4. Otherwise, after the request, SthreeNidhi deposits the amount into the SHG’s bank account within 48 hours.

SthreeNidhi offers fast and low-cost loans for health, education, agriculture, dairy, and other needs. Good SHGs, VOs, and Mandal Samakhyas can get higher loan amounts.

Pavala Vaddi and Low-Interest Support

To reduce the loan burden on SHG women, the government has long given interest support on SHG bank loans, popularly known as “Pavala Vaddi” (meaning “quarter interest”).

Under such support, if the SHG repays its loan on time, most of the interest is reimbursed by the government — so the effective interest for the group becomes very low.

The name, rate, and rules of interest support change with each government and each year. An earlier scheme (YSR Aasara) also waived old SHG dues and gave fresh zero-interest loans up to ₹1 lakh, but such schemes are announced for specific periods. So always check the current interest-subsidy rule with your VO, Sachivalayam, or bank before you borrow.

Andhra Pradesh SHG Success

Andhra Pradesh is a top state for SHG loans. Here is why banks trust SHG women:

  • SHGs cover about 95% of rural BPL households in the state.
  • AP accounts for about 35% of all bank loans given to SHGs in India.
  • The recovery (repayment) rate is about 99% bankers themselves confirm this.
  • Lakhs of rural women, who had never entered a bank before, now take repeat loans.

New Update 2026: Swayam AP Brand for SHG Products

The Andhra Pradesh Government is launching a new brand called “Swayam AP” on 1 August 2026.

  • Swayam AP is a common brand for products made by women SHGs in the state.
  • SERP has identified 65 traditional products from all 26 districts.
  • These are made by about 587 women Self Help Groups.
  • The goal is to give SHG products state-level recognition, quality assurance, and a bigger market.
  • Two fulfilment centres will handle storage, orders, and delivery.

So SHG women can now move from small local selling to a proper brand and market. This is in addition to Velugu Marts and ONDC online selling.

Note: The government has also proposed 100% enrolment of SHG members in life and accident insurance schemes, for family protection.

How to Check SHG Loan Details Online

To check your group’s loan and savings details, you can use the SERP portals:

  1. Go to the SERP IKP portal (ikp.serp.ap.gov.in ).
  2. Open the “SHG Loan Details” section.
  3. Enter your SHG code or group details.
  4. View your loan amount, savings, and repayment details.

For SthreeNidhi loans, use the sthreenidhi.ap.gov.in  portal. You can also ask your VO bookkeeper, Sachivalayam, or bank branch for your group’s loan statement.

Common SHG Loan Problems and Solutions

  • Bank refuses the loan: Your group’s grading is low. Improve regular meetings, savings, records, and repayment for a few months, then apply again.
  • Loan delayed: Ask your VO — you may be able to get quick credit from SthreeNidhi instead.
  • Records not maintained: Many SHGs lose marks here. Keep books, minutes, and financial statements updated with help from the bookkeeper.
  • A member defaults: The whole group’s future loan is affected. Solve it inside the group early.
  • Moneylender pressure: Do not borrow at high interest. Use SthreeNidhi, which is made for this.

AP SHG Loan Helpline and Where to Get Help

If your group has a loan problem, you can get help here:

  • Village/Ward Sachivalayam (first point of contact)
  • DRDA – Velugu / SERP office (rural areas)
  • MEPMA office (urban areas)
  • Your Village Organisation (VO) and Mandal Mahila Samakhya
  • Your SHG’s bank branch
  • Portals: serp.ap.gov.in  and sthreenidhi.ap.gov.in

Always use only the official portals and community channels. Never pay an agent to get an SHG loan.

Conclusion

The AP Women Self Help Group Loan Scheme is one of India’s most successful women-empowerment programmes. In Andhra Pradesh, the group gets the loan, not one woman — so join or form an SHG of 10–20 women, save every week, keep clean records, and repay on time.

After a few months of good discipline, your group gets a bank loan under the SHG–Bank Linkage Programme, based on your Micro Credit Plan. For urgent needs, SthreeNidhi sends credit to your group’s account within 48 hours. No collateral is needed — your group discipline is your security.

AP leads India with about 35% of all SHG bank loans and a 99% repayment rate. And from 1 August 2026, SHG products get a new brand — Swayam AP. For help, contact your Sachivalayam, VO, or the SERP/MEPMA office.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is the AP women Self Help Group loan scheme?

It is a programme where poor women form a Self Help Group (10–20 members), save weekly, and the group gets a bank loan under the SHG–Bank Linkage Programme. The group then lends the money to its members. SthreeNidhi gives extra quick credit.

2. Can a woman get an SHG loan alone?

No. In Andhra Pradesh, the loan is given to the group, not to a single woman. You must join or form an SHG, save regularly, and then the group’s loan is shared among members as per the Micro Credit Plan.

3. How do I join or form a Self Help Group in AP?

Gather 10–20 poor women in your village or ward, contact your Sachivalayam, DRDA-Velugu (SERP), or MEPMA office, form the group with their help, fix weekly savings, open a joint bank account, and start saving and internal lending.

4. What is SthreeNidhi and how fast is the loan? SthreeNidhi is an apex credit cooperative promoted by the government and Mandal Samakhyas. An SHG can request a loan using a simple mobile phone, and SthreeNidhi deposits the money into the SHG’s bank account within 48 hours.

5. Do I need collateral or property for an SHG loan? No. SHG loans need no collateral. Your group’s discipline — regular savings, meetings, clean records, and good repayment — is your security. The bank grades your group before sanctioning the loan.

6. What is a Micro Credit Plan (MCP)?

An MCP is a simple plan made by your SHG showing which member needs how much money and for what purpose. The bank sanctions the group loan based on this plan and your group’s grading.

7. What can I use the SHG loan for?

You can use it for income generation (small business, dairy, tailoring, agriculture), health and education needs, buying tools or stock, urgent family needs, and repaying old high-interest moneylender debts.

8. Is there any interest subsidy on SHG loans in AP?

The government has long given interest support (popularly known as Pavala Vaddi) when the group repays on time. The name, rate, and rules change with each government and year, so confirm the current rule with your VO, Sachivalayam, or bank.

9. How can I check my SHG loan details online?

Go to the SERP IKP portal (ikp.serp.ap.gov.in) and open the “SHG Loan Details” section, or use sthreenidhi.ap.gov.in for SthreeNidhi loans. You can also ask your VO bookkeeper or bank branch.

10. What is Swayam AP for SHG women?

Swayam AP is a new common brand for products made by women SHGs, launching on 1 August 2026. SERP identified 65 traditional products from all 26 districts, made by about 587 SHGs, to give them a bigger market.
